I found this an interesting book in as much as it had so many stories intertwined and running through it at the same time. The most powerful elements of the story were the relationships between the characters – love and hate and made stronger by the circumstances of birth and death.
Initially we had Trudy and Gar (Mum and Dad) and the dogs
Then we have the arrival of Edgar – so we have a 3 way relationship here – Mum, Dad and son.
Then Claude and the relationship of Claude and his brother – Gar
We have the death of Gar and Edgar’s inability to cope.
Claude and his sister-in-law become lovers so we have another relationship forming.
The new relationship between Claude and Edgar evolves from this point.
Edgar’s relationship with the vet, Doctor Papineau, and subsequently his son Glen and the interaction between the Doctor and his son – are all integral parts of the story.
Overriding all of this is the story of the dogs.
I found it amazing that someone could write a story with so many strands and yet hold it all together.
I was impressed by the writing and thoroughly enjoyed the read.
