Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley (again).

“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again” – I have always found this opening line from Daphne Du Maurier’s “Rebecca” haunting and atmospheric.

I have never actually read the book – but it’s on my list – I heard the line at the beginning of the movie many years ago and it has stayed with me ever since. The opening sets an atmospheric and eerie tone for this classic gothic romance .

Do you have a favourite first line you would like to share? There are the obvious ones, like Pride and Prejudice’s  “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” (Jane Austen “Pride and Prejudice.)

What’s your favourite? Anyway, I’m off to read “Rebecca”!
