Mr Wigg by Inga Simpson.

Set in country Australia in the 1970s, this is a beautiful story about Mr Wigg, an elderly man who lost his wife almost a year ago and lives alone on what remains of the family farm. He spends his days working in the orchard, cooking and preserving fruit and watching cricket. Inga’s writing is lyrical and describes the countryside beautifully. Blending reality and fantasy, the story is also enchanting and captivates the reader to continue to find out how it will end. Reading this novel makes you want to enjoy simple pleasures, such as growing, picking, cooking and eating fresh produce. Mr Wigg enjoys cooking with his grandchildren – they make a delicious cake with freshly picked strawberries and whipped cream. Overall I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a unique Australian story, written by a Queensland author. I have also read Inga’s second novel, Nest, which also displays her beautifully poetic writing style.
