Maggie O’Farrell is spot on.
I picked up Maggie O’Farrell’s latest book from the Hot Read stand on recommendation from a colleague and then realised I had read and loved one of her previous books “The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox”. Reading a Maggie O’Farrell book isn’t going to change your life but it is an absorbing and enjoyable experience. This Must Be the Place was a book I jumped into and consumed in a few days – perfect for a Hot Read title – and would recommend to anyone who enjoys modern domestic fiction for entertainment. Although the story is told by Daniel Sullivan the central character is really Claudette, his second wife and an admirable example of a 21st century woman. Glamorous movie star, artist, sustainable homesteader, home schooler, Parisian by birth – you would hate her if she didn’t have some faults – and luckily she does. Daniel and Claudette meet in the wilds of Ireland and we follow their relationship through several years as each of them wrestles with the demons threatening to destroy both their relationship and the perfect bubble they have wrapped around their lives.
