When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi
Paul Kalanithi had just completed years of training as a neurosurgeon when he was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer at the age of 36. In an instant the future he had imagined with his wife had been wiped out. Confronted with death he decided to write a book about what it means to live a good life and how to find happiness when faced with terminal illness.
The first half of the memoir looks at his early life as a child and his training as a doctor. He was raised by immigrant Indian parents who worked hard to give their children a promising future in America. Paul was always torn between being a doctor like his father and going into literature. This book fulfilled his ambitions to be a published author and is written so beautifully it will stay with you forever. It is a poignant and moving memoir about life and death.
