October Online ebook club: Dracula By Bram Stoker

It’s the month of Halloween and so naturally our October online ebook club selection has to be a horror novel. And so this month’s book is Dracula by Bram Stoker.

This tells the story of a young lawyer, Jonathan Harker, who visits Count Dracula’s castle to arrange a real estate transaction and is held hostage there. He escapes after a series of horrifying events and flees back to England. Dracula follows and soon goes after Harker, Harker’s fiance and her friends. With help from Professor Abraham van Helsing, Dracula is chased back to his castle where a final battle takes place.

This month we’re reading a non-fiction ebook that revolves around a somewhat controversial question: is the Internet rewiring our brains?

In The Shallows Nicholas Carr draws on some of the latest research to show that while the Internet has brought us many positive benefits, its very nature has affected our ability to think in-depth. Carr argues that it has changed the way we live, communicate, socialise and remember. It has even affected our own self-conception.

This month we’re looking at a lesser-known novel for our online ebook club, Amy by Peggy Savage. Dr Amy Richmond, after being falsely accused and struck off the medical register travels to France to work as an orderly during World War I. She is hoping to rebuild her reputation and regain her medical licence. It is amongst the suffering of the first world war that Amy discovers the meaning of sacrifice, hope and love.

This month we read “Keeper” by Andrea Gillies, a memoir about caring for a person with Alzheimer’s Disease. It’s not an easy book to read. It is quite depressing and does not end on a happy note.. It is, however an important book as it raises awareness of the reality of Alzheimer’s Disease.
